Optimum times for cruising along Australia's coastline

Cruising around the 36,000 kms long coastline of Australia is a massive adventure. The distance is great, with a lifetime of places and great coastal wildernesses to visit, with weather seasons in the north, the south, and in between, dictating the most suitable passage making periods and the timing of departure from within Sectors of the overall circumnavigation.

The Rally fleet will have a minimum crew of two suitably experieced sailors. Safety provisions will be stringent. There will be a tough scrutineering process. Yachting Australia Special Regulations Equipment Category 1 will apply to monohull and multihull yachts participationg in the Rally. ISAF Sea Safety Survival Course certificates are required for all Rally crew members. Please go to the Safety section of this web site for more information.

So what is our plan?

We are dividing the Australian coastline into eight Rally Sectors. Each Rally Sector will cover a section of the Australian coastline – Sydney – Brisbane – for example.

Each Rally Sector will have its own optimum passage making time-band. Conveniently these optimum time-bands do allow for an anti-clockwise – ‘Australia to Port’ progressive circumnavigation over a 12 month period. You may start from a designated port within a Rally Sector best located for you.

We will appoint ‘Rally Sector Captains’ for each Rally Sector selected from sailors with extensive experience of that particular Rally Sector to help prepare Rally Sector Plans for each Sector and share knowledge for your well being and enjoyment. We will appoint  a ‘Rally Admiral of The Fleet’ to keep a weather eye on all proceedings!

But it won’t stop there. We will be assisted by many cruising yacht clubs around the coast line of Australia who are keen for us to incorporate their established cruising regattas.

We understand that a Rally around Australia has no parallels. The logistics are challenging.

We will provide a Rally Cruise Plan and guide for each Rally Sector that takes into account climate, sea conditions, facilities, the vastness of the journey and its many challenges, ‘must visit’ places with the flexibility cruising sailors need.

Australia has  a vast coastline and there is a huge treasure trove of adventures to cater for.

There are many variables. Stay with us whilst we work through Rally Cruise Plans for each Rally Sector and  our overall rally Master Cruise Plan.

Safe and enjoyable passage making with much social interaction, radio sceds, knowledge sharing, story telling, and looking out for each other, are the fundamental goals of the Rally organisers.

A ‘pilot’ journey is possible drawing on existing cruising guides and sourcing data that will contribute to the ongoing development of a comprehensive Rally-around-Australia guide book. Certainly the plan is to use the Internet extensively with online reference material, online education, forums and every networking tool we can muster.
