2011-12 Around Australia Ocean Rally - interest booming

An appealing feature of the Rally event is that yachts can join the Rally from various ‘Rally Rendezvous Ports’ (RRP) around the Australia coastline. Rally participants from RRP Fremantle in Western Australia are the first to start on their circumnavigation departing Fremantle in late January 2011. www.sailaroundaustralia.com.au Indicative Rally Rendezvous Ports (RRP's) are Fremantle, Esperance, Port Lincoln, Portland, Melbourne, Hobart, Eden, Sydney, Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Cairns, Darwin, Broome, and Exmouth. Between the Rendezvous ports Rally yachts will visit many other ports, numerous sheltered bays and places of interest. As the Fremantle yachts reach RRP’s ahead they are joined by Rally participants starting from each RRP until such time as the Rally fleet is complete at the time the Rally fleet reaches Darwin RRP. The event is scheduled to take place every two years. The Darwin Sailing Club will be very busy in July 2011. The very popular Sail Indonesia Rally - their 2009 Rally attracted cruising yachts from over 20 countries and 130 participants - will start from Darwin in mid July in 2011. Darwin Sailing Club are delighted to welcome our Around Australia Ocean Rally fleet but have requested we do not arrive until after the Sail Indonesia fleet depart which means we will arrive last week in July! Our fleet arrival in Darwin is scheduled for last week in July 2011. We have the following strategic dates around which the timeline of the 2011-12 Around Australia Ocean Rally hinges– • First boats depart Fremantle Rally Rendezvous Port – 22nd January 2011. • First collection of Rally participants arriving in Port Lincoln, South Australia, late February 2011. • The complete Rally fleet arriving in Darwin Rally Rendezvous Port last week of July 2011. • The complete Rally Fleet arriving in Fremantle Rally Rendezvous Port in time for the ‘Fremantle Race Week’ regatta which is scheduled for 08 – 16 October 2011. Fremantle Rally yachts are then home. • The Rally fleet, less the Fremantle participants, (unless they wish to keep going!) will make their way east. We would like to hold you in the south-west of Western Australia until you venture across the Great Australia Bight in late January 2012 February is a popular month for Rally regattas in South Australia and Tasmania with the South Australian Port Lincoln Yacht Club – ‘Lincoln Race Week’ regatta starting in the middle of February around the same time as the popular ‘Van Diemen’s Land Circumnavigation Cruise’ around Tasmania starting in Hobart later in February.
As we may have as many as 130 Rally yachts heading that way in February 2012 we have some interesting scheduling challenges to wrestle with! We have been invited to join other Rally programs up the east coast of Australia. Stamina may be a prime requirement for our Rally participants as there will be no shortage of events and social functions and opportunity to visit some great places and meet some great people around Australia. Yacht owners from overseas are asking questions about our safety requirements, obtaining extended stay visas, issues with gas installation regulations, and more.
