With 160 boats having already reserved their starline slot the 2011 Around Australia Ocean Race and Rally has clearly hit the spot with the sailing community both within Australia and internationally. The logistics for this event are huge, however Bob Williams Ocean Events Director reports good progress is being made. Like the song says ‘I’ve been everywhere man’, well not quite but I’m getting close in my travels around the coastline of Australia visiting our Around Australia Ocean Race start/finish ports and our Around Australia Ocean Rally ‘Rendezvous Ports’. Airlie Beach, Adelaide, Albany, Broome, Busselton, Cairns, Darwin, Hamilton Island, Mandurah, Melbourne, Port Lincoln, Townsville and marinas in between. Brisbane and Sydney are coming up. This week I was back in the beautiful city of Melbourne with the opportunity to attend the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s AGM and awards presentation night held at the magnificent new Sandringham Yacht Club premises. If there is a more dedicated group than Commodore George Shaw and his team at OCRV in Australia I want to meet them! For sheer dedication to the development of the sport of offshore ocean racing in Australia and emphasis on safety at sea ORCV has to be admired. We are so happy that the team at ORCV are part of our team building and managing the Around Australia Ocean Race and Rally. This week I’m in Adelaide for meetings with Tourism people and the people at the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia and the Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron then over to Port Lincoln to meet the Port Lincoln Yacht Club folks as we are keen to incorporate their cruising events and expertise into our Around Australia Ocean Rally program. We are receiving enquiries from yachts people in the USA that are seeking long stay visas from our Australian embassies to enable them to be in Australia a bit before, for the duration of the Rally, and some time after. In this regard we are in touch with the Superyacht Base Australia (SYBA) people www.superyachtbase.com . We have a common interest in facilitating the process and encouraging super yacht owners to bring their vessels to Australia and not only experience some amazing unspoilt cruising grounds but avail themselves of some of the best Superyacht service facilities in the world. The good work the Superyacht Base Australia people are doing across Australia will benefit all international yachting visitors to Australia. Terri Watson a member of the famous St Francis Yacht Club from San Francisco and a participant in the Around Australia Ocean Rally continues to be a great ambassador for our Race and Rally events in the USA. From what we can understand we have many yachties in the USA eyeing off our Race and Rally events. ‘Come down under’ – we want to see you here! One of the world’s best cruising grounds is Tasmania. Not for the faint-hearted but for the adventurous sailors Tasmania offers a cruising experience like no other. We will be in Hobart for discussions soon. If my experience to date is anything to go by Australia is embracing the Around Australia Ocean Race and Rally events and we are about to turn on a very memorable experience for all that participate. <: img Alt_8Queensland 464.jpg :>
